 Marie-Anne Barbier was christened in Orléans on the 21st of January 1664. She was born into a family of craftsmen and burgesses. Her father, Jacques Barbier, was master of artillery before becoming Provincial commissary of artillery. He married Marie Sinson whose family belonged to the bourgoisie d'offices. Jacques and Marie Barbier may have come to Paris, where the Sinsons had settled, when they left Orleans in the 1670s. Nothing is known about her formative years. At the turn of the 17th century, she attended the salon of Marie-Anne Mancini and wrote “a few elegies” and fugitive pieces that are now lost. Martin de Baton, the poet followed later by Edme Boursault, the playwright, who was her mentor throughout her career as a dramatist, encouraged her first literary attempts.
 In July 1701, she published a short “Epitaph to Mlle de Scudéry” in Mercure Galand. From the beginning she showed a strong interest in joining a literary genealogy of female writers and her keenness to strike up relationships with women who were powerful literary patrons. With the support of Boursault who introduced her to actors from the Comédie-Française, she had her first tragedy, Arrie et Pétus, performed on the 3rd of June 1702. The play drew the attention of her contemporaries and some accused Barbier of lending her name to a male author. She answered her detractors in the preface of the edition that followed and aroused a controversy that would go on in the writings of Voltaire and Pierre Bayle, who dedicated one of his Réponses aux questions d’un provincial (1704) to the debate. Her critics to one of her close relations attributed her second tragedy, the Abbot Simon-Joseph Pellegrin, who denied writing it. During the following decade, Marie-Anne Barbier wrote two more plays that were performed at the Comédie-Française. Her search for patrons and an exclusively female literary circle turned her into a woman of society and she became a regular at the salon of Elisabeth-Sophie Chéron, the painter.
