Born in Paris in 1754, Marie-Victoire Lemoine was the eldest daughter of Charles Lemoine and Marie-Anne Rousselle. Of her parents we know only that they were Parisian burghers; her sisters Marie-Denise Lemoine (known as Nisa Villers) and Marie-Elisabeth Lemoine (later Gabiou) were also painters. Yet unlike her sisters, Marie-Victoire never married; and although she lived with family members, she supported herself through her work. In 1779 she resided in the family house and later lived with her sister Marie-Elisabeth, remaining in the household even after her sister's death. We also have little evidence of Marie-Victoire Lemoine's artistic training. She probably studied with the academician François Ménageot, most likely in the early 1770s when he lived and worked in a house owned by the art dealer, J-.B. Lebrun, husband of painter Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun, whose atelier was also in the house. An association with Vigée-Lebrun may account for one of Lemoine's best known works, her Atelier of a Woman Painter (Salon of 1796). The painting is generally seen as a tribute to Vigée-Lebrun, for Lemoine's woman painter wears the signature costume (the robe en chemise) of Vigée-Lebrun. The image hints at some direct, even formative, contact between the two women. Perhaps Lemoine also worked in Vigée-Lebrun's studio, as several of her compositions suggest.

It appears from the record of her portraits that Lemoine had gained a significant reputation by 1779, when she first showed her work at the Salon de la Correspondance, a private establishment run by Pahin de la Blancherie. Among those works was a portrait of the Princesse de Lamballe, an intimate of Marie-Antoinette, which received a very favorable notice in the Nouvelles de la République des Lettres et des Arts. Lemoine continued to paint portraits, miniatures, and genre scenes, which, judging from exhibition records and extant works, constitute the majority of her oeuvre. At least one painting suggests she had ambitions to be a painter of literary subjects. Her Jeune femme et Éros indirectly reprises a motif from Ariosto's Orlando furioso in which lovers carve their initials into a tree. Her Allégorie de la peinture (1780s, Orléans, Musée des Beaux-Arts) demonstrates that she also worked in the allegorical tradition. She experimented with genre painting, too, and her Une Frascatane et un guitariste (1793) shows her aptitude for representing "rustic" figures and costumes in a scene that anticipates the later troubadour paintings of Fleury Richard and Marguerite Gérard. Although Lemoine practiced many different genres, most of her identified works are portraits of women and children, many of which (e.g. Petite fille dans un paysage italien, 1793) are highly sentimentalized, and others of which recall the cult of motherhood of the late XVIIIth and early XIXth centuries (e.g. Une Mère et sa fille, c.1805).

If Lemoine's life is poorly known, perhaps we have a sense of how she imagined herself as an artist from the Atelier, where a women artist is shown with her painting tools before a canvas on which is sketched a classical theme. The depiction of a painter with her student stages the transmission of art from woman to woman. The references to Vigée-Lebrun are joined to echoes of Labille-Guiard's Self-Portrait with Two Pupils (1785), for Lemoine's pupil is close in profile and dress to the portrait of Gabrielle Capet in this work. Yet unlike Labille-Guiard, who places the art lesson in an indeterminate austere space, Lemoine combines domestic furnishings with the accoutrements and tools necessary for painting. Lemoine's image, both domestic and professional, evokes the actual situation of most women artists of the age. Likewise in the sketch on the canvas, while a priestess or vestal oversees her devotions, a girl kneels before a statue on an altar representing Athena, a deity appropriate as patron of both the arts and household crafts. The doubled setting and devotion to Athena are thus metaphoric of the artist's position as a woman living her life between the domestic and professional worlds.

The Atelier was among the first works Lemoine showed at the official art Salon. She continued to exhibit publicly at the Salons of 1796, 1798, 1799, 1802, 1804, and 1814, where her work was sometimes praised, sometimes blamed. Of the artist's last years we know only that she continued to participate in public exhibitions until six years before her death on December 2, 1820.

Claire de Duras, daughter of the Count of Kersaint and of Claire de Paul d'Alesso d'Eragny, was born on March 22, 1777, in Brest. She spent part of her childhood at the Panthémont convent school. Her father was a liberal, but he spoke out against the cruelty of the Republicans and was guillotined on December 5, 1793. In 1794, Claire's mother took her into exile in Philadelphia before settling in the West Indies. They later returned to Europe, first to Switzerland, then to London, where Claire married Amédée Bretagne-Malo Durfort de Duras in 1797. The couple had two daughters, Félicie, born in 1798, and Clara a year later. In 1801, the family returned to France. In 1808, Claire de Duras made the acquaintance of Chateaubriand-a meeting that was to change her life. During the Restoration, her husband was in favor with Louis XVIII. Claire was hence able to devote herself to her salon in the Tuileries, where she was hostess to Humboldt, Cuvier, Montmorency, Talleyrand, and Madame de Staël. Claire de Duras had Chateaubriand appointed ambassador to London; he proved rather ungrateful however. Claire was also bitterly disappointed by Félicie, her favorite daughter, who neglected her mother after her marriage to the Prince of Talmont. This feeling of disappointment cast a gloom over her life, as is apparent from both her letters to Rosalie de Constant and Chateaubriand and her literary works. She suffered from bouts of nervous depression, and died in Nice in January 1828.

Claire de Duras did not wish her first novel, Olivier, completed in 1822, to be published during her lifetime, as she felt the subject matter was too daring. The story is in fact about a young man suffering from sexual impotence. The 1971 publication, edited by Denise Virieux and based on Claire de Duras's manuscripts, demonstrates that this work was used by Stendhal as a model for Armance. Her short novel Ourika, based on a true story, was published in 1823. The central theme is again that of difference, in this case viewed from a racial perspective. Ourika is a young Senegalese woman who grows up in France in the care of Mme B. and lives through the Revolution, the Emigration, and the Empire. She is in love with Mme B.'s son, but comes to realize that the racial barrier means that they can never marry. Her despair is self-destructive, and in the end she kills her. The theme of social exclusion also governs the fate of Edouard, the hero of another, eponymous novel. After the death of his parents, Edouard is taken in by the Duke of Nevers. He falls in love with the duke's daughter, who is a young widow. The difference in their social status makes all thoughts of marriage impossible, and Edouard ends up dying in the American War of Independence. In 1827, Duras also published a work entitled Pensées de Louis XIV.

Claire de Duras left two more novels in a fragmentary state, Le Moine du Saint-Bernard, mentioned in a letter to Rosalie de Constant dated May 15, 1824, and Les Mémoires de Sophie, part of which Agénor Bardoux included in his biography of the author. A religious work entitled Réflexions et Prières inédites was published after her death.

As has so often been the case with women writers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Claire de Duras was long seen as the author of sentimental novels. The recurrent theme of otherness that runs through her works has recently awakened fresh critical interest. Claire de Duras explores the fundamental principles of the French Revolution that had sparked debate during the Enlightenment, such as the principle of equality of all men (and women, too). Her novels demonstrate how life itself dooms such principles to failure.

Catherine Duchemin was born on Nov. 12, 1630, daughter of the master sculptor Jacques Duchemin and of Elisabeth Hubault, a couple then residing on the rue Saint-Martin in the Parisian parish of Saint-Jacques de la Boucherie. She certainly received her first drawing lessons in her father's studio, but her painting teacher is never named. No contemporary documents support the theory put forward by Auguste Jal in 1867 that she received lessons in the studio of Nicolas Baudesson. It seems likely that Jal was keen to establish a link between Catherine and her future husband, the sculptor François Girardon (1628-1715), who was for a time apprenticed to Nicolas's brother Antoine. In fact, the Duchemins and Girardons were probably in contact because they were neighbors and shared the same trade. When Catherine and François were married on Oct. 23, 1657, their families were both living on rue Cléry in the parish of Saint-Eustache. François Girardon had recently been elected to the Academy and was embarking on a brilliant career. In 1658 he was charged with redecorating the château of Vaux-le-Vicomte, and he then moved on to work on the château at Versailles. In the meantime, Catherine either started or continued her career as a flower painter. On April 14, 1663, after an examination of her work, she was given the honor of being accepted as a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, "following the King's intention to confer his grace on all those who excel in the arts of Painting and Sculpture, and on all those judged worthy of it, with no distinction of sex". Catherine's reception piece was a large-scale flower painting measuring four by three feet (approximately 1.30 m x 97 cm). She was the first woman to be given this honor in France. Her talent must have been outstanding, yet other considerations -such as the decree promulgated in February 1663 which obliged "all those who are capable of being of service to His Majesty" to apply for admission to the Academy- may also have led her to submit her work. Even so, Catherine's admission -not simply the first at the Academy of Painting and Sculpture, but also the first in any official academy in France- was highly significant, and it set an important precedent for women.

Despite this official recognition of her talent by her peers, we find no further mention of Catherine until her death in her lodging in the Louvre, on Sept. 21, 1698. In 1700, Florent Le Comte claimed that she had stopped painting to look after her household and her children. His affirmation is credible since between 1658 and 1673 she gave birth to no fewer than ten children. In addition, the ever-growing importance of François Girardon on royal work sites and at the Academy, of which he became director in 1674, no doubt put pressure on the couple to assume a life style in keeping with their new social rank; and this meant that Catherine had to give up all remunerated work.

Although her career was short-lived, Catherine Duchemin was one of the very few seventeenth-century women artists to earn universal praise, both in books on famous women and in eighteenth-century art dictionaries -no doubt because she was the first woman accepted into the Academy. As another sign of her fame, two portraits painted of her during her lifetime (one a miniature, the other life-size) are extant. The latter, formerly attributed to Sébastien Bourdon, shows her sitting at her easel with palette and brushes in hand, in the act of painting poppies in a vase set by her side. Tradition holds that she painted the vase and flowers in the portrait herself; and while there is no actual proof of this, it may well be true. If so, it constitutes the only surviving trace of her art. Catherine is regularly cited by art historians from the second half of the nineteenth century onwards, particularly in books on still-life painting.
