Thus, while they have long been associated with<br \/>\nscientific exploration, knowledge, and contemplation, owing largely to<br \/>\nanalogies with their instrumental use?analogies that lead to the book as<br \/>\n speculum, as explored by Herbert Grabes, for example?reflective<br \/>\nsurfaces also function as metaphors for the illusory nature of<br \/>\nrepresentation. They can create false, shadowy, or deformed images of<br \/>\nearthly reality, as suggested both by the ubiquitous Ovidian theme of<br \/>\nNarcissus at the fountain and the Pauline per speculum in aenigmate.<br \/>\nThe contradictory uses of mirrors in iconography mean they can stand as<br \/>\nfigures of virtue or vice, depending on whether they accompany Prudence<br \/>\nor Venus, or represent Mary\u00ab the speculum sine macula \u00bbor Eve. Mirrors<br \/>\nare not only ambivalent, but also Janus-like: whether examined as<br \/>\nobjects, in their instrumental, decorative, or other functions, or as<br \/>\nvisual or textual figures, mirrors have fascinated humankind, not least<br \/>\nbecause they seem to serve as a kind of threshold phenomenon allowing<br \/>\nfor the contemplation of inner and outer worlds, as well as the<br \/>\notherworldly.
